Comment:
This is a hypothetical protein, defined by nucleotide similarity to it's HSV-1 counterpart. It has 75-85% C-G content over it's length.

Orf-P is antisense to the gamma34.5 gene and part of the 8.5 kb latency transcribed transcript (LAT). Lagunoff and Roizman(1995) report that in HSV-1 it is repressed during productive infection by binding of ICP4 to it's cap site. The Orf P protein is localized in splicesomes and binds p32, a component of the ASF/SF2 alternate splicing factors. This binding blocks synthesis of viral proteins from sliced mRNA, which includes ICP0 (alpha0) and UL15. By blocking synthesis of ICP0, a powerful viral gene transactivator, Orf-P may play a role in establishing or maintaining latency.

Orf-P is dispensible for growth in cell culture, see Roizman, PNAS 93:11307 (1996).

The HSV-2 genome contains two copies of Orf-P one wholly within the long terminal repeat, RL region, (this location) and one in the inverted repeat region separating the long and short unique regions.
