Comment:
The UL26 protein is a serine protease, see Liu and Roizmann (1992) and it's substrates are itself and the UL26.5 protein. UL26 cleaves itself between Ala 247 and Ser 248 and also between Ala 612 and Ser 613. Likewise it cleaves off the last 25 residues of the UL26.5 protein. Person et.al.(1993) report that VP21 (aa 248 to 637) and VP24 (aa 1-247) are products of the self cleavage of UL26.
Both the HSV-1 and HSV-2 UL26.5 gene promoter, transcriptional unit and CDS are within, in-frame and 3' coterminal with UL26. In HSV-1 Roizman assigns the UL26 gene gamma expression regulation, (PNAS 93:11307, 1996, Medline: 97030190.

Blast Summary:  PSI-Blast Search
Residues 1-637 of the UL26 protein are 73% similar using gapped BLAST to residues 1-635 of the UL26 protein in Human herpesvirus 1 (strain 17) and residues 309-637 are 67% similar to residues 1-329 of the UL26.5 protein in Human herpesvirus 1.
