Comment:
In both the HSV-1 and HSV-2 genomes the UL26.5 gene promoter, transcriptional unit and CDS are within, in-frame and 3' coterminal with UL26. The serine protease of UL26 cleaves UL26.5 between Ala 304 and Ser 305 processing ICP35b,c to ICP35e,f. UL26.5 forms an inner core or capsid scaffolding. Upon packaging of the DNA it is removed from the capsid shell. In HSV-1 the UL26.5 gene is essential and has gamma expression regulation (Roizman, PNAS 93: 11307, 1996, Medline: 97030190).
