Primary Evidence:
Chang YE, Menotti L, Filatov F, Campadelli-Fiume G, Roizman B, UL27.5 is a novel gamma2 gene antisense to the herpes simplex virus 1 gene encoding glycoprotein B, J Virol 1998 Jul;72(7):6056-64, Medline: 98285767.

Comment:
Chang et al.(1998) locate a gene in both HSV-1 and HSV-2 which is antisense to UL27 and designate it UL27.5. In HSV-1 they report it is a cytoplasmic protein, shares an epitope with gJ and has gamma-2 expression regulation. The calculated weight of the HSV-2 protein is significantly greater than found in infected cells, while using the only alternate methionine initiation codon predicts a protein with a smaller molecular weight than found experimentally.
