Comment:
Ward, Barker and Roizman (1996) locate a gene which codes antisense to UL43 and label it UL43.5 and Carter, Ward and Roizman (1996) hypothesize a mechanism of gene regulation based on antisense transcripts. The amino acid sequence predicts the HSV-1 UL43 protein to be a membrane-associated protein, however the HSV-2 protein has a lower net charge, isoelectric point and no predicted transmembrane segments. In HSV-1 UL43 is dispensable for growth in cell culture (MacLean et al. 1991) and Roizman assigns it gamma expression regulation (Roizman, personal communication).
